React Project Architecture at Scale
A well-structured codebase allows engineering teams to ship features rapidly without stepping on each other's toes or introducing regressions. When a project grows beyond 50 components, flat folder structures become chaotic.
In this lesson, you will learn how to structure enterprise React projects using Feature-Driven Architecture, decouple API and business logic layers, and enforce clean module boundaries.
Enterprise Directory Layout
src/
├── app/ # Application initialization, root providers, router
├── assets/ # Static images, fonts, global styles
├── components/ # Shared, domain-agnostic UI primitives (Button, Modal)
├── features/ # Business domains (self-contained modules)
│ ├── auth/
│ │ ├── components/ # Feature-specific UI
│ │ ├── hooks/ # Feature-specific hooks
│ │ ├── services/ # Feature API calls
│ │ ├── types/ # TypeScript interfaces
│ │ └── index.ts # Public API export barrel
│ ├── dashboard/
│ └── billing/
├── hooks/ # Shared custom hooks (useDebounce, useMediaQuery)
├── services/ # Shared API clients, Axios instances, interceptors
├── store/ # Global client state (Zustand / Redux)
├── types/ # Global TypeScript definitions
└── utils/ # Pure helper functions (formatDate, currency)
The Feature Module Pattern
Every folder inside features/ behaves like an isolated micro-package. It contains everything required for that specific business capability:
- Its own UI components.
- Its own custom hooks.
- Its own API communication functions.
- An
index.tsbarrel exporting only the public components needed by the rest of the application.
Best Practices
- Enforce Unidirectional Dependencies: Features can import from
components/andutils/, but shared components must never import from features. - Keep Utilities Pure: Functions in
utils/should be deterministic with zero side effects. - Colocate Tests and Styles: Place
Component.test.tsxright next toComponent.tsxfor quick navigation.
Summary
Feature-driven architecture scales cleanly across dozens of engineers. By organizing code by business domain, establishing strict layer boundaries, and colocating related assets, your React projects remain maintainable over years of growth.
