API Reliability: Idempotency Keys & Fault Tolerance
In mission-critical financial transactions and ecommerce ordering systems, a network timeout during a POST /checkout request puts the client in a dangerous state: Did the payment process, or did it fail before charging?
If the client retries blindly, the user is charged twice. If the client aborts, the order is lost. The industry solution is Idempotency Keys (Idempotency-Key / RFC draft).

1. The Bulkhead Isolation Pattern
Named after the watertight compartments in ship hulls, the Bulkhead Pattern isolates service thread pools and connection pools. If the Recommendation Service hangs and exhausts its dedicated 20-thread pool, the critical Checkout and Authentication services continue operating normally without thread starvation!
Summary & Key Takeaways
Idempotency-Keyheaders guarantee that retrying POST requests never triggers duplicate charges.- Redis caches idempotent response payloads for up to 24–48 hours.
- Bulkhead patterns isolate failures to prevent catastrophic cascading outages.
Best Practices & Senior Guidance
- Require
Idempotency-Keyon All Mutation APIs: Enforce mandatory idempotency keys on billing, order creation, and fund transfer endpoints.
